Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open SuperPipe Semfinals

Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open

SuperPipe Semifinal Results

Mikkel Bang & Jamie Anderson Win Rail Jam

As much as snowboarders love a good snowstorm, sometimes you can have too much of a good thing. Saturday’s SuperPipe semifinals at the Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open saw heavy snowfall and little sunshine making for a snowy pipe that challenged the riders speed and hucking ability.

Competition was tight during today’s women’s SuperPipe semifinals as 21 women competed for eight spots in the finals. Aspen’s Gretchen Bleiler qualified first with a run that included a huge crippler off the first hit and back-to-back 540’s. Manuela Laura Pesko clinched the second spot with her first run throwing down an impressive frontside 7 to a Cab melon setting her up for two 540’s. Japan’s Keiko Ohmura’s second run was her best, spinning on nearly every hit, that included a frontside 7, frontside 540 melon, backside 540 into a frontside 360. Finals will be an exciting showdown with riders Torah Bright, Ellery Hollingsworth and Shiho Nakashima all competing for the cash and top spot in the Burton Global Open Series standings.

For the men’s SuperPipe semifinals, the flakes were hammering down as 42 men were trying to turn up the heat and earn one of the 16 spots for Sunday’s finals. Finland’s Janne Korpi qualified first with a Cab 1080 tail grab, melon, backside 540 mute, frontside 720 tail grab, Cab 720 finishing off his run with an alleyoop. Burton’s Kazuhiro Kokubo’s best effort of a frontside 720, Cab 720, melon, Michaelchuck nose grab, frontside 9 secured him into the finals in second place. Right behind him was Keir Dillon securing his place in the finals with a KD Roll, frontside inverted 7 melon, Haakonflip indy, melon, method into an inverted backside alleyoop. The Japanese contingency will be rolling strong into Sunday’s SuperPipe finals with the other 12 of the 16 top positions.

The theme of the day was snow and that proved no different for the evening Rail Jam. Gale force winds and dumping snow made the jam format contest tough for visibility on the two feature course consisting of a straight rail and a cannon box. Mikkel Bang continued his winning ways from yesterday’s ParkStyle by taking the men’s competition with runs like a backside lip slide on the rail to a nose press nollie front flip off the box. Jamie Anderson did a repeat win from last year, taking first place and the cash for the women with a tail press, switch out on the rail and a Cab 270 on the box. Both Mikkel and Jamie took home $2,000 USD for their rail jam wins, catching some fresh pow turns when the event ended.
