Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open Parkstyle Finals

Mikkel Bang & Jenny Jones Win Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open ParkStyle Finals

Japan has an air of mystery around the islands that collectively make up the country. It could be the spirits in the trees that house the much sought after powder snowboarders are always searching for. However, the mystery of the 2008 Nissan X-Trail Nippon Open so far has been the weather. After a rough couple days of heavy snow and high winds, the sun finally came out today for the Nippon Open ParkStyle finals at ALTS-Bandai resort.

Due to the heavy snowfall and high winds competitors saw early in the week, both the men’s and women’s ParkStyle semifinals and finals were held back-to-back for an action packed day of snowboarding. All riders had three runs to get their best score once they made it to the finals with the women taking the course first.

Great Britain’s Jenny Jones had three solid runs with her final effort securing first place with the run of a 50/50 gap to 50/50 boardslide to fakie off the box into a Cab 540 on the kicker followed by a huge frontside air on the hip. Jamie Anderson put together a strong second run starting off with a big gap tailslide to fakie rolling into a Cab720 melon, capping off her run with a stylish nose grab. Representing for Japan, Izumi Amaike saw a return to the podium, repeating her third place finish from last year with a 50/50 gap to 50/50 on the box, mute Cab 540 off the kicker into a frontside air on the hip.

On the men’s side, the riding was even more impressive. With his insane style, making his run look almost too easy, Mikkel Bang claimed the lead early on in the finals with his first run; however it was his second effort that clinched the top spot. Kicking the run off with a gap to switch backside lipslide on the rail to an insanely smooth switch backside 900 mute, Mikkel cleaned up with a stalled out frontside alley oop off the hip. The Nippon Open always promises feats of gravity defying snowboarding and second place finisher Kazuhiro Kokubo did not disappoint with a solid run that included a 50/50 gap to boardslide to fakie, switch frontside 900 melon followed by an insane frontside alley oop corked frontside grab off the hip that could only be described as “freaking huge” by Head Judge Jason Grossi. Jaakko Ruha earned his first Burton Global Open Series podium finish with third place, charging with an impressive 50/50 gap to nosepress on the rail into a 1080 tailgrab over the jump into a backside 720 indy on the hip.
Both Mikkel and Jenny earned $15,000 each for their first place finishes and 8,000 points towards the Burton Global Open Series Championship titles. Jenny’s win bumps her up to third place in the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour and Mikkel breaks into the Top 10 standings for the men.

UNION SQUARE STREET SESSIONS RECAP

Thursday, February 7th saw the second annual Union Square Street Sessions in downtown Manhattan. Based in the heart of NYC, the USSS brought over 20 top riders, trucks full of snow, a killer rail set-up, sponsor village and music to an urban setting that rarely sees snowboarding. Yale Cousino, Lucas Magoon, Aaron Bittner, Sky Gale, Mike Casanova and Chris Rotax were just a few of the riders that showed up to throw-down. The $30,000 prize purse awarded one of the highest pay-outs for a rail jam with $15,000 cash for first place. The action kicked off at 3pm with demos, music and plenty of giveaways in the sponsor village. The qualifiers narrowed the field to 16 and the jam format motivated riders to get in as many runs and tricks as they could as the judging was based on overall impression during the 30 minute session. Burton riders Yale Cousino and Chris Rotax advanced on to the semis but Yale had tweaked his knee on the Red Bull wall ride and pulled out of the competition. Rotax held it down for his teammates though, advancing to the finals with seven other riders including Magoon, Bittner and Casanova. As the finals began, Trevor Andrews’ band Trouble took to the main stage and got the crowd amped. Unsponsored rider Mike Casanova ended up taking home the big check for $15k after landing a killer Cab 270 hardway 180 switch 50/50 switch backside 180 out on the down rail. Chris Rotax finished 3rd and won $3500, his backside 270 on 270 out on the down rail was one of his most notable tricks. “The 2008 Street Sessions were off the hook this year," said Rotax. "The level of riding was amazing! The set-up was sick and the crowd was stoked. The warm weather and the music made this event one to remember.”

BURTON SNOWBOARDS HOSTS FOURTH ANNUAL WOMEN’S LEARN TO RIDE CAMPS FOR RIDERS OF ALL ABILITIES

Weekend Stops in Copper, CO, Northstar-at-Tahoe, CA and Hunter Mountain, NY

Burlington, VT (January 3, 2008) – Burton Snowboards today announced its fourth annual Burton Women’s Learn To Ride (WLTR) Camp schedule for 2008. The Burton WLTR camps are women-only snowboard weekends where ladies can learn to snowboard for the first time, or improve their skills in an environment created specifically for them. The three-day weekend events include the finest instruction, goodie bags, a special event to benefit Boarding for Breast Cancer and of course, the riding experience of a lifetime.

Whether it’s embracing your inner snowboarder for the first time or progressing existing skills, women of all abilities will partake in three days of instruction with top snowboard coaches trained in specific teaching methods for women. First-timers will use Burton’s own specialized WLTR equipment, and experienced riders can choose to use their own equipment or demo Burton’s newest line of boards, boots and bindings. The third and final day, attendees can freeride with fellow campers or stick with a coach to learn more skills.

“As a company of snowboarders with a full and comprehensive equipment line dedicated to women, we can offer women riders what no other company can,” said Donna Carpenter, Founder & Director, Burton’s Women’s Initiatives. “Our Women’s Learn To Ride Camps give campers a chance to meet new friends, have fun and gain confidence they haven’t had on snow before.”

Saturday evenings at camp will include a special event benefitting Boarding for Breast Cancer, the non-profit, youth-focused breast cancer education, awareness and fundraising foundation designed to teach women the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. Campers will also enjoy a fashion show featuring Burton women's apparel with a twist: the clothing will be modeled by male instructors at each resort. Every camper will leave with a gift bag filled with limited edition goodies made exclusively for WLTR campers.
